During the decade of the 1990s, TXU provided electric service to a growing population and
economy that covered approximately one-third of the state of Texas. While our customer count
increased by 25 percent during the decade, our emission rate for carbon dioxide (the most common
man-made greenhouse gas) from our power plants decreased by 16 percent.
During 2001 (the most recent year for which figures are available), TXU voluntarily reported
carbon dioxide reduction efforts of 23.3 million tons to the United States Department of Energy –
representing the largest carbon dioxide reduction by an investor-owned utility company in
the nation. This brings the company’s total since 1991 to more than 193 million tons
of carbon dioxide reduced, sequestered or avoided.
A combination of projects including fuel blending, renewable energy and energy conservation efforts
also helped the company achieve a carbon dioxide rate that is 8 percent below the national average.
