CURRENT EFFORTS – CLIMATE CHALLENGE PROGRAM
TXU has been a leader in the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Climate Challenge Program. From its beginning in 1991 when we reported a 7.3-million-ton reduction to 2001 when we reported a 23.3-million-ton reduction, we have actively supported this voluntary government program to track utility-sector carbon dioxide reductions.

As part of our program, we have consistently added new reduction projects annually to our Climate Challenge Program, which now includes fuel blending, demand-side management, vehicle use reductions, employee transportation programs, coal ash sales, landfill methane recovery, power plant improvement projects and tree planting programs.

Through these programs, we have been able to reduce or offset our emissions by the equivalent of more than 193 million tons of carbon dioxide since 1991. The table below shows the cumulative impact of our Climate Challenge Program. In the future, this program will be replaced by the new “Power Partners” program discussed later in this section.
ADDITIONAL EFFORTS
During 2002, TXU participated in the international Carbon Disclosure Project by completing an in-depth survey of carbon dioxide emissions. Today, greenhouse gas emissions and reduction programs for several hundred companies along with business sector analysis for this project are available on the Internet at www.cdproject.net.

TXU added an additional carbon sequestration program to its greenhouse gas reduction efforts in 2002. The company joined the ForesTree program, established by select members of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) to develop carbon sequestration projects in the U.S. TXU also has its own carbon sequestration program on its reclaimed mine lands, participates in the Texas Reforestation Foundation program and is a member of the EEI-sponsored Utilitree Program.

FUTURE EFFORTS FOR CLIMATE CHANGE
TXU supports voluntary efforts to address the climate change issue. We have set challenging sustainability targets for the future that include:

Increasing the amount of electricity provided by renewable resources.
