STEWARDSHIP OF THE LAND
TXU has reclaimed more than 51,000 acres of mined lands since our lignite mining operations began more than 30 years ago. Lignite coal is an economical source of fuel for electric power generation, and TXU has saved customers more than $7.5 billion by using this fuel source. In doing so, we have proven that it is possible to mine and reclaim the land in an environmentally sound manner and add value to the land in the process.
In 2002, we mined 23 million tons of lignite, reclaimed 1,579 acres of land and met regulatory bond release requirements on 383 acres. During the year, state and federal inspectors spent 248 inspector-days on TXU mine sites. Only one notice of violation was issued in 2002, and that resulted in a compliance ratio of 99.6 percent. This violation, which was self-reported, pertained to conducting mining operations too close to an active gas pipeline. The violation resulted in no adverse environmental impact
