for batteries instead of
recycling them ourselves. Changes in vendor
requirements, regulatory requirements that
affected vendors and the company’s power-line
maintenance programs accounted for reductions
in the other categories.
During the past ten years, TXU has recycled
more than 13.7 billion pounds of materials,
including 12.7 billion pounds of coal combustion
products, 660 million pounds of wood products,
177 million pounds of scrap metal, 62 million
pounds of drained electrical equipment, 30
million pounds of insulating oil and 4 million
pounds of paper and aluminum.
USING RECYCLED PAPER
In addition to our recycling efforts, we also
promote the use of recycled products. Each year,
we use recycled paper to print various customer
information pieces, brochures and annual reports
– including this Environmental Review.

COAL COMBUSTION PRODUCTS
As has been the case for the past 10 years, the recycling of more
than 2.2 billion pounds of coal
combustion products – fly ash and bottom ash –
from our Big Brown, Monticello, Martin Lake
and Sandow generating plants accounted for the
largest quantity of material recycled during the year.
TXU has been instrumental in the
development of commercial markets for various
types of ash that remain after burning coal for
electric generation. Most of the combustion
products sold during the year were used as a
cement substitute in ready-mix concrete for
highway, bridge and building construction. The
reuse of this existing material saves energy costs
and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by
replacing raw materials in cement manufacturing
and saving landfill space that would otherwise
be used to dispose of the product.
